I don’t want to change the Acrobat Reader on my computer, ever.
i hate that too. Open Adobe reader and go to Help>check for updates…preferences and uncheck the automatically check for updates.
Open up Adobe Reader ( I am using version 7)
Click on EDIT > Preferences
In the list under Categories select Updates.
Select “Do not automatically check for critical updates”
Untick “display notificatin dialog at startup”
