You had to use it to read pdf or if you have the Professional version, you can make pdf or convert it.
But if you only want to read pdf, I recommend using Foxit reader which is a free software and faster than Adobe acrobat reader which is quite slow .

you can read pdf files using pdf files. the benefit of pdf files is that portable on any platform (HP,Sun,Apple,….) and any OS (Windows, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux,…)

It lets you read .pdf files and this is supposed to be good because it is cross platform; but, then so is .html. My computer came with the full version of Adobe Acrobat and can read and create .pdf files and I have done this for the heck of it, but still do not see the practicality of the thing although I do know that some businesses use it, so it is good to know.
